PostSubject: Brassgoggles is down   Fri 12 Sep 2008, 12:15 pm

Brassgoggles is down again...
This is probably not of much significance to most here, but I have created a forum specificly for the occasions when B.G. goes down; anyone interested will find it here:
http://sparegoggles.forumotion.net/

cheers

First of all, it IS of significance, and it mourns me greatly. I never tried to fight the Brass Goggles, I'm only disillusioned about a certain kind of forum patron.

Secondly, your post might be seen as a direct challenge of my authority. Now that Brass Goggles is down, you might as well use this very forum, which is here for about two weeks more and tries to be more than a stopgap solution.

Thirdly, you're a bit rash. A whole new forum, one day after the main forum went down? Get a grip, have faith in Tinkergirl, wait for a week, then start again.

Sorry it's not meant as a challenge to your authority- that was rather rash of me. Also I have no doubt in tinkergirl's ability to get it up & running again -the purpose of creating a specific forum is more to act as a stepping stone untill BG is back online again; however I didn't want to send everyone here, as in the downtime, most subjects will be either technical in nature or offtopic banter- neither of which I wished to flood your site with, as I know that the 'noise' is one of the things that the new forum was created to cut down on. However I imagine that anyone wishing to continue serious conversation will either come here, or go to the gatehouse. However if you want I can point people in the direction of this forum.

The main reason for posting the link here was to alert anyone who may know the details current situation so that they could pass on the message.

Sorry about the confusion
Pheobsky.

OK, the situation as I grasp it is as follows:

The domain, www.brassgoggles.co.uk, was paid for a certain amount of time and expired, mainly due to the fact that Tinkergirl simply had no time to care. Due to its traffic, it was on the list of some domain squatters, who were already circling like vultures. The domain should be for sale again, just for far more than its original value.

Datamancer has secured the rights to www.brassgoggles.net though. He stands ready to hand it over to Tinkergirl as soon as she asks.

This is the one I got from Jake vonslatt

Everyone is fine but BG has hosting issues.

Apparently the hosting company, Fasthosts, has a CPU usage quota that BG has been regularly exceeding and has now been suspended.

Amanda and her technical staff are working on the issue and they thank you all for your concern!

Cheers,

Jake.

----edit----

Actualy those two versions seem to fit quite well together Neutral I hope brassgoggles doesn't have to change site...

The BG DNS staus is: Created: 2006-09-24 -Expires: 2010-09-24 -Updated: 2008-08-26
The site is currently listed as " Domain Status: Registered And Parked Or Redirected " and the site registrant is still Amanda Jeffrey.

What bothers me, as a long time IT guy, is that all the BG outages could have been avoided entirely, simply by managing changes properly, and by working with their provider to avoid bandwidth quota problems.. Oddly enough, I suspect that a lot of the problem was caused by the completely irrelevant and idiotic posts that seem to have become more the norm, witness the Catchpole and his ilk.

Cheers
Harold

It would be really better if you pointed them this way, Pheobsky. I still don't understand people who like an improvised stopgap solution more than something that would like to become a full-fledged alternative someday.

I still believe my initial solution to be the most appropriate at the time, despite its stopgap nature: there were two things that I wished to do with it- firstly to notify all of the current situation of BG, & secondly to allow the BG community to continue its online discourses with as little interference as possible (in style & moderation). Both of these I believed I have done. As such the stopgap option by its very nature is what is required; something to fill the gap that is not a replacement or alternative but a bridge, that once crossed may be left behind. After I've posted this, I will post a link to both this forum & the gatehouse, so that if people desire an alternative it is easy to find.

Your post points out the main problem. People see me as some kind of uber-oppressive dictator, simply because I abandoned the Steampunk Forum due to a few well-founded issues with its general style. Now they fear that I might enforce my kind of style with an iron fist.

I still don't understand why people think such complete and utter balderdash. I don't have any reason to enforce anything. If you don't like off-topic posts moved to their respective off-topic area (or merged into a thread dedicated to ramblings in a similar style), you're wrong in ANY board with rules.

Perhaps- but I don't think that hence why I joined this forum cat
The reason for me is that I wanted to continue BG -the sparegoggles forum is designed to be merely an extension of BG, however this forum, is a forum in its own rights & as such will have a different character. I think also with the nature of a temporary forum it will be active for a few days perhaps every few months at most & then for the rest of the year will be silent, but as this is a given thing there is no problem, however with a proper forum this is rather disruptive & so people are more inclined to be considerate & avoid it I would think? (I may be wrong & too optomistic about people perhaps but heigh ho!)
Besides from all of this the BG facebook group was previously being used for the same purpose, however it was only open to facebook users & so in taking the idea away from facebook meant everyone could access it.

Do you want to imply that this forum isn't serious?
